As a Brisbane wedding photographer, when asked to photograph a wedding at Kangaroo Valley, in New South Wales' stunning Southern Highlands, it was an immediate YES!
I hadn't met Krista and Andrew, but I was recommended by their caterers Violets and Vinegar, who happen to be my amazingly talented sister and brother in law, Cass and Matty. I did however get the opportunity to meet with them in person at Christmas time at Eschalot, an incredible restaurant in Berrima, owned and operated by Cass and Matty. I am a bit biased, but seriously, if you're in the Southern Highlands, go check it out!
I fell in love with them instantly. Krista was beyond a bubbly personality. Her smile and energy made the room shine and Andrew bathed in all her glory haha! When Andrew spoke of his family coming all the way from Wales for the wedding, I could tell it was going to be a heart felt day and wild night.
I flew to Sydney the day prior and met with the couple. Krista and I then embarked on an adventure to find the perfect setting for the post ceremony location shoot. Well, long story short, I found a block of land with a house that was falling apart and a scary dog protecting what looked like a forbidden land. The views surrounding the property and the direction that the sun was setting in were complete perfection....so "fuck it" I said and in we went. The dog came running at me but thankfully he was gorgeous and a gentle old man came out of the house and honestly looked delighted to see another human. We ended up chatting with him for a bit, taking a selfie and thanking him for allowing us to use his land on the wedding day.
The day came in glorious May and the weather couldn't have been anymore perfect. The light was a photographers dream and off I went experiencing what it would be like to be a Southern Highlands wedding photographer full time. Oh they have it good!
Each location was stunning, every vendor nailed it and the energy was warm, inviting and calming.
The best part was that the couple were up for anything. They allowed me to have complete creative freedom and the dress and denim jacket with hand sown "Mrs Hawkins" proudly displayed on the back definitely got dirty!
Congratulations Krista and Andrew Hawkins and thank you for having me document your special day.
